# 68 Quadrillion Underground Miles of Fungi

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-06-11 21:07 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
Earth’s hidden fungal network spans a cosmic scale—68 quadrillion miles—shaping climate and ecosystems unseen

## Intelligence Brief
The findings highlight the network’s critical role in regulating soil health, carbon storage, and global temperatures by decomposing organic matter and facilitating nutrient exchange between plants and microbes. Coverage emphasizes the network’s **unprecedented scale** and its **ecological and climatic significance**, framing it as a ‘hidden organ’ of the planet’s biosphere.

Outlets including *Grist*, *Inside Climate News*, *Scientific American*, and *ScienceAlert* are focusing on the **astounding scale** of the discovery, comparing it to cosmic distances to underscore its magnitude. Discussions center on how this network may mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon and how its disruption could destabilize ecosystems.

Watch for follow-up studies on **fungal resilience** under climate stress and potential **biotechnological applications**—such as mycoremediation or fungal-based carbon capture. Coverage does not yet specify whether the findings will prompt policy shifts or further field research, but the scale suggests broad implications for soil science and conservation efforts.
