# Scientists Measure Earth’s Vast Underground Fungal Webs

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-06-11 20:07 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
Scientists unveil the first global map of Earth’s hidden fungal networks—spanning distances beyond comprehension.

## Intelligence Brief
A new study has quantified the sheer scale of mycorrhizal fungal networks beneath the Earth’s surface, revealing a total length exceeding 100 quadrillion kilometers. The *Mycorrhizal Infrastructure Map (IMAGE)* provides the first comprehensive visualization of these subterranean webs, which connect ecosystems worldwide and outmass human biomass. Researchers emphasize the networks’ role in nutrient cycling, soil health, and potential climate regulation, though exact ecological impacts remain under investigation.

Coverage highlights the study’s unprecedented scope, with outlets like *The New York Times*, *National Geographic*, and *Phys.org* framing it as a paradigm shift in understanding fungal dominance in terrestrial systems. *New Scientist* and *EurekAlert!* focus on the methodological breakthroughs enabling global mapping, while *The Guardian* and *MSN* underscore the networks’ staggering scale—comparable to astronomical distances. Visualizations accompanying reports illustrate the density and distribution of these fungal threads across continents. Next steps include assessing how these networks respond to environmental stressors like deforestation, climate change, and soil degradation.

Scientists may also explore their potential for biotechnological applications, such as carbon sequestration or bioremediation. Public interest could drive further funding for fungal ecology research, though long-term field studies will be required to validate theoretical models.
