# Worker bees build a 'royal palace' for the honeybee queen

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-06-11 17:26 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
Scientists uncover how worker bees engineer a 'royal palace' to shape future queens—sparked by a child’s curiosity.

## Intelligence Brief
Researchers have identified a previously unrecognized behavior in honeybees: worker bees construct specialized wax chambers—dubbed a 'royal palace'—to nurture developing queens. This architectural investment, distinct from the standard hexagonal cells, appears to influence queen development beyond diet alone, according to studies published in *Nature* and *Chemical & Engineering News*. The discovery was inspired by a scientist’s two-year-old son, who questioned why queens were raised differently.

Coverage highlights the structural differences in queen cells, emphasizing their elongated, dome-like shape compared to worker cells. Outlets including *BBC Wildlife Magazine*, *AP News*, and *Reuters* note that this construction may play a critical role in the queen’s physical and behavioral traits, challenging prior assumptions that royal jelly alone determines queendom. Phys.org and *Nature* detail how cell architecture could regulate temperature, humidity, or even pheromone exposure during development.

Watch for follow-up studies on whether this behavior varies across bee species or if it holds implications for conservation efforts. Researchers may also explore whether human intervention—such as mimicking these chambers—could aid queen rearing in apiculture. No immediate field applications are confirmed, but the findings could reshape understanding of social insect biology.
