> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-06-12 01:07 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
New research shows octopuses can use mirrors to navigate their surroundings and locate hidden prey, a milestone for invertebrate cognition.

## Intelligence Brief
Scientists have observed octopuses utilizing mirrors to find food outside their direct line of sight. This study marks the first documented instance of an invertebrate demonstrating the ability to understand and utilize mirror images to map space.

Coverage from The Times of India, Yahoo, blue News, Martin Cid Magazine, ScienceDaily, and BBC Wildlife Magazine emphasizes that this cognitive behavior, previously associated with primates and dolphins, is now confirmed in invertebrates. Reports highlight the octopuses' capacity to navigate hidden spaces using these reflective tools.

Future developments will depend on whether further studies expand upon this cognitive evidence or identify similar behaviors in other invertebrate species. Coverage does not yet specify the long-term implications of these findings for broader marine biology research.
