## Executive Summary
A California death linked to rat-borne disease sparks warnings about exotic pet risks

## Intelligence Brief
A Berkeley resident has died from leptospirosis, a rare bacterial disease, after trapping, feeding, and breeding wild rats in an RV. Officials confirm the case follows an earlier outbreak in the area, though coverage does not yet specify the timeline between exposure and fatality. The individual’s activities—including close contact with infected rodents—are cited as the likely source of transmission.

Coverage emphasizes the unusual nature of the case, with multiple outlets (Newser, AOL, Patch, Yahoo News, KTVU) highlighting the link between rat breeding and disease. Local health authorities have not yet issued broader advisories, but the incident has drawn attention to zoonotic risks associated with non-traditional pet ownership. Watch for potential updates on public health advisories, especially in regions with active rodent populations.

Authorities may expand testing or guidance if additional cases emerge. The case could also prompt discussions on regulations around exotic or wild animal breeding.
