> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-06-15 04:07 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
Astronomers report Mercury reaching its greatest eastern elongation today, offering a prime viewing window for the elusive planet.

## Intelligence Brief
Mercury is currently positioned at its greatest eastern elongation, a phase that allows the planet to appear at its maximum distance from the sun in the sky. This positioning provides a brief opportunity for observers to spot the planet before it becomes obscured by solar glare.

Coverage from Astronomy Magazine, Sky & Telescope, and Space highlights the celestial event for June 15, while Focus Taiwan and the Taipei Times note that the Astronomical Museum has organized observation events to mark the occasion. CGTN reports that the window for optimal viewing extends into June 16.

Future developments depend on clear weather conditions for stargazers attempting to track the planet's path. Coverage does not yet specify the visibility duration beyond the immediate 48-hour window as Mercury begins to slip closer to the sun.
