# Hand Dominance Is Driven by Practice, Not Birth

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-01 18:07 UTC · Category: Health

## Executive Summary
New research from UCLA suggests that hand dominance is primarily shaped by practice and predictive brain models rather than innate biology.

## Intelligence Brief
A study indicates that dominant hand proficiency stems from repetition and the development of predictive brain models. These findings challenge the long-held theory that handedness is determined by mechanical superiority or birth-related biological wiring.

Coverage from outlets including StudyFinds, U.S. News & World Report, Neuroscience News, and the Santa Fe Institute emphasizes that the brain learns to favor one hand through consistent use. Additional reporting from Technology Networks, Earth.com, geneonline.com, and UCLA Health highlights the role of the brain in refining motor skills for everyday tasks.

Future developments will depend on how this research influences scientific understanding of motor control and learning. Coverage does not yet specify if or how these findings will impact existing neurological theories regarding lateralization.
