The brief

The United States men’s national team, coached by Mauricio Pochettino, reached the World Cup round of 16 where they faced Belgium. Coverage notes that the U.S.-Belgium broadcast drew 33 million viewers, setting a new U.S. audience record for soccer. The match also marked Pochettino becoming the winningest USMNT manager in FIFA World Cup history.

Outlets such as The New York Times, USA Today and ESPN highlighted the record viewership, while sports analysis sites like Goal.com and Athlon Sports focused on Pochettino’s tactical approach and the team’s loss. Business‑focused pieces from Reuters, the Miami Herald and The Guardian examined the financial backing behind the USMNT, noting investments from a Citadel executive and a Miami billionaire and framing the team’s quest for glory as part of the broader attention economy.

Future coverage is likely to track calls for structural changes within U.S. Soccer, as suggested by Goal.com’s five‑point plan, and to monitor any shifts in coaching strategy after the Belgium exit. Attention will also remain on how recent investments influence the next World Cup cycle and whether the record TV audience translates into sustained commercial interest.
