# Evidence Mounts for Hierarchical Black Hole Mergers

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-07 10:07 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
Researchers have identified a massive new catalog of 390 gravitational-wave events, suggesting some black holes are formed by previous mergers.

## Intelligence Brief
Scientists have released a comprehensive catalog of 390 cosmic events, including 161 newly detected black hole collisions. Data collected during a ten-month run using LIGO detectors in the United States contributed to these findings. The research identifies a population of black holes that may be hierarchical in nature, meaning they were formed from the remnants of earlier black hole mergers.

Coverage from MIT News, ScienceDaily, and the American Physical Society emphasizes that these findings provide evidence for hierarchical merger processes. Reports from Space Daily and Inshorts highlight the scale of the new data, noting that the catalog now documents 390 total gravitational-wave detections.

Future developments will rely on ongoing analysis of the LIGO detector data. Coverage does not yet specify the timeline for further findings or the next scheduled observation runs.
