# Physicists created a tiny universe where time emerged without a clock

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-10 12:07 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
Physicists built a quantum system of 24,000 rubidium atoms where time emerged independently of external clocks.

## Intelligence Brief
Researchers at the University of Birmingham have constructed a miniature universe using a cloud of 24,000 ultracold rubidium atoms. Within this system, observers witnessed the emergence of a property described as "entropic time," allowing the experiment to distinguish past from future without the aid of an external timekeeping device.

Coverage from outlets including Live Science, ScienceDaily, and WION emphasizes the observation that time within the system was capable of speeding up, slowing down, or stopping. Reports suggest this demonstrates a key theory regarding the nature of time, though specific details on the methodology or theoretical framework remain sparse in current reporting.

Future coverage is expected to detail the specific mechanisms that allowed the system to generate temporal order. Analysts anticipate further explanation regarding the implications for the understanding that time may be an emergent property rather than a fundamental backdrop.
