# Box Office: ‘Moana’ Flounders With $43 Million Debut, Among Weakest of Disney’s Live-Action Remakes

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-12 16:07 UTC · Category: Entertainment

## Executive Summary
Disney's live-action Moana remake stumbles at the box office with a forty-three million dollar debut.

## Intelligence Brief
According to coverage from outlets including Variety, Forbes, Bloomberg, and the Wall Street Journal, the live-action Moana film has debuted with figures between forty-two and forty-six million dollars domestically, culminating in a ninety-five million dollar global opening weekend. Headlines from Yahoo and other sources indicate that the Dwayne Johnson movie could potentially face financial losses reaching one hundred million dollars. The reception has prompted widespread discussion across entertainment journalism regarding the overall health and trajectory of Disney's live-action remake strategy. Coverage across Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and IndieWire heavily emphasizes the underperformance of the title, explicitly questioning whether Disney's live-action remakes have run their course.

Outlets like Fox News contextualize the release by linking its box office failure to Snow White, identifying a pattern of struggling live-action adaptations for the studio. Meanwhile, publications such as Animation Magazine point out that while the live-action Moana floundered, other animated titles like Toy Story 5 and Minions and Monsters have continued to demonstrate box office animation domination during the same timeframe. Background provided by Rotten Tomatoes and People.com highlights audience reviews and statements from director Thomas Kail regarding how the live-action adaptation differs from the original 2016 animated film. Despite these creative differences and audience feedback suggesting the remake stays true to what made the original special, the commercial return has fallen significantly short of expectations.

Major financial and entertainment reporting from the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg frames the debut as one of the weakest openings in the history of the studio's live-action remake franchise. Looking ahead, coverage does not yet specify what long-term adjustments Disney will make to its upcoming slate of live-action adaptations in light of these financial results. Observers across Morning Brew and Euronews continue to monitor the immediate fallout of the box office bomb, while specific details regarding studio strategy shifts remain unreported. Readers must look to future industry announcements from the studio itself to determine how upcoming projects will be handled following the underwhelming theatrical launch.
