## Executive Summary
New data reveals 10,000 excess deaths across Europe following a severe, record-breaking heatwave in late June.

## Intelligence Brief
Recent data indicates that Europe experienced 10,000 excess deaths during a severe heatwave that occurred in late June. This surge in mortality is tied to extreme temperature spikes across the continent. In Germany specifically, the impact was severe, with the country recording 5,000 excess deaths during the same late-June period. Beyond the heat-related mortality, The Guardian reports a distinct tragedy in Germany, where nearly 100 drowning deaths were recorded in June, with many of the victims being young men. This indicates a multifaceted public health crisis resulting from the extreme weather event. Multiple major international news outlets are closely monitoring the fallout of these weather patterns.

Reuters, Euronews, and HuffPost all reported the 10,000 excess death figure based on the new data. Bloomberg provided the specific breakdown for Germany's 5,000 excess deaths. The New York Times focused on the broader link between the European heat waves and the thousands of excess deaths. Additionally, Forbes highlighted the record-breaking nature of these heatwaves through photographic evidence of the scorching conditions, while the Financial Times noted a shift in climate patterns with the arrival of tropical nights in Europe. Contextual reports from Euronews highlight the intensity of the temperatures, noting that forecasts reached up to 38°C over a weekend. The appearance of tropical nights and record-breaking heatwaves suggests an environment where temperatures remain high even after sunset, compounding the risk to public health.

These factors contributed to the high mortality rates and the increase in accidental deaths, such as the drownings reported in Germany. The scale of the excess deaths suggests that the heatwave's intensity surpassed previous norms, placing a significant strain on regional health systems and public safety measures across Europe. Observers are now looking for information regarding the duration of these extreme weather events. According to Euronews, there are ongoing questions about how long the heatwave will last in Germany. Future reports will likely track whether temperature levels remain near the 38°C peak or if further record-breaking spikes occur. Because the current data focuses on the aftermath of the late-June period, the focus remains on the total count of excess deaths and the specific demographic impacts, such as the high number of young men among the drowning casualties in Germany.
