> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-13 17:07 UTC · Category: Technology

## Executive Summary
Square Enix faces backlash for its decision to omit free upgrade paths for the Octopath Traveler collection on the upcoming Switch 2 hardware.

## Intelligence Brief
Coverage reports that the publisher is requiring fans to purchase these versions at full price, rather than offering a free or discounted transition path for owners of the original titles. Outlets including Siliconera, Polygon, and GameSpot highlight significant criticism regarding this pricing strategy.

The discourse emphasizes that this approach is being perceived as a negative standard for how developers manage software migrations to the new console platform. Future reports will track whether Square Enix alters its pricing structure in response to player feedback.

Coverage does not yet specify if similar policies will be applied to other titles in the company's catalog.
