> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-13 07:07 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
The Perseid meteor shower is returning this week, offering observers across the U.S. and India a celestial display of up to 100 meteors per hour.

## Intelligence Brief
The Perseid meteor shower is scheduled to begin this week, with a spectacular peak expected to occur in August 2026. According to coverage from MSN and AOL.com, this event is considered one of the best meteor showers of the year and will be visible across the United States, where observers may see up to 100 meteors per hour. Regional reports indicate a wide geographic interest in the event, with local guidance provided for viewers in California by The Desert Sun, in Wisconsin by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and in Mississippi by The Clarion-Ledger. Other regional reports from News4JAX and the Reno Gazette Journal highlight the event's visibility in Florida and Nevada, respectively. Extensive reporting from multiple outlets emphasizes the accessibility and timing of the event. Forbes notes that the shower returns this week under the specific conditions of an 'Earthshine' moon.

Travel and Leisure Asia is providing detailed information for viewers in India on the best places to observe the meteors in August 2026. Meanwhile, USA Today and marthastewart.com urge audiences to prepare by looking up next week. The coverage suggests a high level of public anticipation, with New Scientist describing the upcoming August display as dazzling, and dailyvoice.com noting that the summer sky show begins this week before reaching its peak. Contextual details provided by the coverage indicate that the Perseids are a major annual astronomical event. For residents of Illinois, WROK 1440 AM / 96.1 FM reports that this is one of two rare sky events expected next month. The event is being framed not just as a scientific occurrence but as a recreational opportunity; Yahoo Creators suggests that people plan backyard campouts or road trips to better experience the display.

This positioning suggests that the meteor shower is viewed as a primary summer activity for stargazers and travelers alike across different continents. Moving forward, observers are advised to monitor the transition from the initial start this week to the official peak in August. Coverage from Travel and Leisure Asia and other outlets indicates that the specific locations chosen for viewing will be critical for the best experience. While the current focus is on the start of the shower, the upcoming August peak remains the primary point of interest for those seeking the highest frequency of meteors. Further updates will likely specify the exact dates of the peak and the best viewing windows relative to the 'Earthshine' moon mentioned by Forbes.
