> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-13 12:07 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
Scientists are proposing a radical 'sun-dimming' strategy using artificial cloud brightening to mitigate the impacts of a potentially historic Super El Niño.

## Intelligence Brief
A group of scientists has proposed a climate defense tactic involving the dimming of the sun to combat the effects of a Super El Niño. This strategy focuses on the use of artificial cloud brightening to reduce the impact of the weather pattern. According to coverage from Yahoo and Mother Jones, this approach is being considered as a way to throw shade at the phenomenon to protect the planet. The proposal comes as researchers seek methods to tame the atmospheric conditions associated with this specific climate event. Reporting from the New York Post emphasizes that this radical plan is currently viewed by scientists as being among the best options available to protect Earth from what could be a potentially historic El Niño season.

NDTV highlights the specific plan to use cloud-based interventions to reduce the impact of the Super El Niño. Japan Today's coverage notes that while artificial cloud brightening could potentially tame El Niño, the study also indicates that the process comes with associated risks. These diverse outlets collectively highlight the urgency of the scientific inquiry. Contextual coverage from News.com.au frames this as a race to save Australia from the consequences of a Super El Niño, suggesting a high level of regional stake in the success of such an intervention. The need for such a drastic measure stems from the projected severity of the current season, which scientists suggest could be historic in scope.

The proposal moves the conversation toward active climate defense tactics rather than passive observation, reflecting the perceived intensity of the upcoming weather cycle. Future developments will depend on the findings of the study mentioned by Japan Today regarding the risks involved in artificial cloud brightening. Observers will be watching to see if the proposed sun-dimming plan moves from a scientific suggestion to a practical application. Coverage does not yet specify a timeline for implementation or the exact scale of the cloud brightening efforts, but the ongoing focus remains on whether this tactic can successfully protect vulnerable regions from the Super El Niño.
