## Executive Summary
A new free macOS application called WhatCable is trending for its ability to identify the actual capabilities of visually identical USB-C cables.

## Intelligence Brief
A new free application for macOS, identified by several outlets as WhatCable, has emerged to help users identify the specific technical capabilities of their USB-C cables. Because these cables often appear identical in physical form, users struggle to distinguish between those that support high-speed data transfer or fast charging and those that are significantly slower. According to reports from The Verge, CNET, and 9to5Mac, the application is designed to reveal the truth about these mystery cables, allowing MacBook Air and other device users to determine exactly what each individual cable is capable of doing during operation. Coverage of this tool is widespread across major technology publications. The Verge and CNET emphasize the app's ability to help users root out slow charging cables from their collection.

PetaPixel describes the software as a way to unravel annoying USB-C cable mysteries, while Notebookcheck notes that the app reveals the capabilities of cables used with MacBook Air and various other devices. Additional reporting from Six Colors, How-To Geek, and Yahoo Tech focuses on the fact that while the cables look the same, a single specification is what separates fast cables from slow ones, and WhatCable provides the necessary download of information to tell them apart. This trend highlights a persistent problem in the current hardware ecosystem where the universal USB-C connector hides a wide variety of internal specifications. As noted by How-To Geek and Yahoo Tech, the visual uniformity of these cables masks the differences in their performance specs. This creates a situation where users may unknowingly use a slow cable for a task that requires high speed, leading to frustration.

The release of a free tool like WhatCable addresses this lack of transparency by providing a software-based method for users to audit their hardware and categorize their cables based on actual performance data rather than visual guesswork. Moving forward, users can utilize WhatCable to organize their cable inventory and ensure they are using the correct specifications for their hardware. Based on the coverage from ExtremeTech and other sources, the focus remains on the application's ability to provide a definitive answer regarding the identity of nondescript cables. The current reporting indicates that the tool is available for free on the macOS platform, and users can now identify the specific spec that separates the slow cables from the fast ones within their own device ecosystems.
