According to reports from The New York Times and Yahoo Sports, Spieth has been reliving the events of the 2017 Open Championship, including a specific and well-remembered incident involving a drop on the driving range. This return to the site of his past success is framed as an attempt to recapture the specific form and momentum that led to his victory at the Birkdale course nearly a decade ago. Coverage from multiple outlets emphasizes the emotional and psychological weight of this return. The New York Post reports that Spieth is determined to end a current drought by returning to the site of what he describes as a true experience.

Golf Digest notes that Spieth remains defiant about his ability to return to the specific form that fueled his triumph at Birkdale.
