# Ontario Wildfires Burn On, Releasing More Smoke

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-17 13:07 UTC · Category: World

## Executive Summary
Ontario is facing its worst wildfire season on record, triggering mass evacuations and sending dangerous smoke levels into the United States.

## Intelligence Brief
Widespread wildfires are currently raging across northwestern Ontario, leading to significant displacements and infrastructure disruptions. According to reports from CBC and Reuters, the fires have expanded rapidly, prompting evacuation orders for areas including the region near Lac des Mille Lacs. The crisis has reached a point where early estimates shared by The Globe and Mail and CBC suggest this is the worst wildfire season on record for the province. The impact is severe, with ictnews.org reporting that one northern First Nation has been razed. These events have forced thousands to flee, while others, such as the elders highlighted by the Toronto Star, have chosen to hold their ground within their communities. Local disruptions have also affected transit, as Northwest Ontario News noted a highway reopening after a previous closure caused by the forest fires. Major international and national outlets are focusing on the humanitarian and atmospheric consequences of the blazes.

The New York Times and Reuters report that wildfire smoke is choking parts of the United States, with air quality reaching dangerous levels in both the U.S. and Canada. Coverage from CNN describes the speed of the fires, mentioning a "wall of smoke" that arrived unexpectedly for some residents. Meanwhile, Global News and CTV News have highlighted personal accounts of the disaster, including a lodge owner's harrowing experience and a teenager who used a tin boat to flee the fires before returning to assist neighbors. These reports emphasize the volatility of the situation, as Premier Ford has warned evacuees against returning home after some residents attempted to take fire suppression into their own hands. The situation is complicated by tensions between the affected populations and the government. The Guardian reports that First Nations groups, who have borne the brunt of the wildfires, claim the government failed to provide adequate help. This contrasts with statements from the Minister of Natural Resources and other officials, who, as reported by CBC and Thunder Bay News, have defended the province's response and asserted that nothing went wrong with the actions taken by Ottawa.

In response to the ongoing crisis, Native News Online notes that the federal government is expanding an Indigenous-led fire response. Additionally, the government is investigating the actions of CN after a rail crew was surrounded by wildfire, according to CBC. Future developments will likely center on the mobilization of additional resources and the safety of displaced persons. Global News reports that the Canadian Forces are currently on standby to assist as the fires continue to burn. The New York Times continues to track live updates and smoke maps to monitor the air quality impact across North America. Observers will be watching for further evacuation orders and the progress of the Indigenous-led fire response efforts. The focus remains on whether the government's defense of its response will align with the experiences of the devastated First Nations groups and the thousands of evacuees currently waiting and worrying about the status of their homes.
