## Executive Summary
Jon Rahm avoids a penalty but receives a code-of-conduct warning after throwing his club during Round 2 of The Open at Royal Birkdale.

## Intelligence Brief
During the second round of The Open Championship 2026, golfer Jon Rahm was involved in an incident at Royal Birkdale following an errant tee shot. According to reports from Yahoo Sports and USA Today, Rahm launched his club in response to the poor shot. While the action was visible and disruptive, the coverage confirms that Rahm was not penalized for the outburst. Instead, he was issued a formal warning regarding his behavior on the course, as he reacted to the miss by throwing his equipment. Multiple sports outlets have focused on the nature of the warning and the specific actions taken by the golfer.

GOLF.com and Golf Digest both describe the action as "tomahawking" the club, while Golfweek specifies that Rahm slammed the club on the ground. Golf Channel and Golf Digest highlight that this was a code-of-conduct warning, with Golf Digest specifically noting that the warning was for "serious misconduct." These outlets, along with ESPN, emphasize that the warning served as a disciplinary measure even though no actual penalty strokes or disqualifications were applied at that moment. The context of this incident centers on the high-pressure environment of The Open 2026 held at Royal Birkdale. The event is one of the most prestigious in golf, where player conduct is strictly monitored. The coverage from USA Today and ESPN suggests that the emotional reaction to an errant tee shot led to the breach of protocol.

This specific incident during Round 2 underscores the tension and stakes associated with the tournament, as professional golfers are expected to maintain composure despite the difficulty of the course conditions at Royal Birkdale. Moving forward, observers will monitor whether Rahm maintains his composure for the remainder of the tournament. Since he has already received a formal code-of-conduct warning for serious misconduct, any further outbursts could lead to more severe consequences. Based on the reporting from Golf Channel and Yahoo Sports, the primary focus remains on his ability to avoid further penalties as he continues his play at The Open. The coverage does not specify any further disciplinary actions planned unless another violation occurs during subsequent rounds.
