## Executive Summary
Copper wire thefts from rooftop AC units are targeting Pasadena businesses, including a local bakery, amidst extreme Southern California heat.

## Intelligence Brief
A series of copper thefts has targeted businesses in Pasadena, specifically focusing on rooftop air-conditioning units. According to reports from ABC7 Los Angeles and Yahoo, the Sweet Red Peach Bakery was one of the establishments left without air conditioning during a period of extreme heat in Southern California. These criminal activities have not been limited to food services; NBC Los Angeles reports that a Pasadena animal hospital also fell victim to the theft of copper wiring. The scale of these losses is significant, with NBC Los Angeles noting that thousands of dollars in copper wiring have been stolen from a business rooftop unit in the city. Coverage from multiple outlets, including KTLA, CBS News, and the Pasadena Star News, emphasizes that police have identified a pattern of thieves stealing air-conditioning units or the wiring within them.

ColoradoBoulevard.net highlights the economic impact of these crimes, noting that the affected Pasadena businesses are now facing costly repairs to restore their cooling systems. The consistent reporting across these local news sources suggests a systemic issue where rooftop infrastructure is being targeted for its valuable metal components, leaving essential businesses vulnerable during high-temperature weather events. This trend is particularly critical because the thefts are occurring during a Southern California heatwave, which increases the immediate need for functioning climate control. The targeting of rooftop units suggests that thieves are accessing heights to extract materials. Because air conditioning is vital for both the operations of a bakery and the care provided at an animal hospital, these thefts create operational disruptions and financial burdens for local business owners who must now navigate expensive repairs while dealing with extreme external temperatures.

In response to these incidents, the city of Pasadena is providing guidance to the business community. According to the Pasadena Star News and MyNewsLA.com, the city is offering specific tips to help business owners thwart copper wire thefts in their rooftop AC units. Future developments will likely center on whether these preventative measures reduce the frequency of the thefts and if police can identify the perpetrators responsible for the targeted removals of wiring and units across the city.
