## Executive Summary
Flash floods in Afghanistan's Nuristan province have killed at least 23 people and left over 100 missing as rescuers search for survivors.

## Intelligence Brief
Severe flash flooding has struck Afghanistan, with the Nuristan province specifically identified as a devastated area. According to reports from AP News and The New York Times, at least 23 people have been killed. The scale of the disaster is further evidenced by the number of missing persons, with BBC and NBC News reporting that more than 100 individuals remain unaccounted for. Rescuers are currently conducting desperate searches for survivors amidst the wreckage of homes and infrastructure that were destroyed by the rushing waters. Multiple international media outlets are providing consistent coverage of the tragedy. Al Jazeera and BBC both highlight that these flash floods were driven by monsoon activity.

The Independent describes the intensity of the event by noting that the floods felt like an earthquake. Further reports from DW.com emphasize the specific devastation within the Nuristan province, while CGTN and Yahoo News focus on the human toll, reporting that survivors witnessed people being swept away by the floods as they occurred. To understand the current crisis, it is necessary to recognize the environmental triggers and the resulting damage. The coverage indicates that monsoon-driven weather patterns led to the sudden onset of flash flooding. The Guardian notes that the floods were powerful enough to destroy homes, leaving residents displaced and vulnerable. The intensity of the water flow and the speed of the flash floods created a scenario where rescuers are now tasked with searching for scores of missing people across the affected landscape of Nuristan.

Attention now turns to the immediate safety of the region and the ongoing recovery efforts. Al Jazeera reports that rescuers are searching for survivors while facing the ongoing risk of fresh floods hitting the area. As the search for the more than 100 missing individuals continues, the priority for emergency teams remains the recovery of the dead and the location of any remaining survivors. Coverage does not yet specify the exact number of homes destroyed or the total cost of the infrastructure damage.
