# Strong Northern Lights Forecast: These 12 States Could See Aurora Borealis Tonight

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-21 22:07 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
A series of geomagnetic storms and solar activity is pushing the Aurora Borealis further south, making the Northern Lights visible across Canada and the U.S.

## Intelligence Brief
A sequence of geomagnetic storms is currently creating opportunities for aurora borealis sightings across North America. According to reports from Forbes and People.com, the visibility of the Northern Lights has shifted across various forecasts, with predictions ranging from 9 to 20 U.S. states potentially seeing the lights on a given night. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a minor geomagnetic storm watch specifically for parts of the northern United States. This phenomenon is occurring alongside visibility across most of Canada, as noted by Narcity and msn.com. Significant coverage is being provided by a diverse range of outlets including U.S.

News & World Report, The Weather Network, and Tech Times. These reports emphasize the technical drivers of the event, such as a coronal hole that is pushing solar wind speeds past 700 km/s. This specific solar activity is expected to bring potential aurora sightings to distant cities including Seattle and Oslo. Additionally, local outlets like the Lower Bucks Times are analyzing what specific regions, such as Bucks County, can realistically expect to see during these atmospheric events. Contextually, the timing of these sightings in July presents a unique challenge for observers.

Travelers Today notes that July's short nights significantly cut the viewing window for those hoping to see the aurora. Beyond the scientific interest, there is an economic dimension to the trend; reports from dars.gov.et suggest that the Northern Lights forecast may offer a limited economic boost for northern U.S. border states by increasing tourism in those specific regions during the viewing period. Looking forward, observers are monitoring the specific state counts provided by different sources to determine the reach of the aurora. Coverage does not yet specify the exact duration of the current geomagnetic storm watch, but the focus remains on the interaction between solar wind speeds and the latitude of visibility across the U.S. and Canada.
