## Executive Summary
Central Florida is experiencing a rise in leprosy cases, with health experts and reports pointing to armadillos as a primary driver of the spread.

## Intelligence Brief
Health officials and media reports indicate that leprosy cases are currently on the rise in Central Florida. This increase is specifically linked to the presence of armadillos, which are referred to in some coverage as the "roadside runner" responsible for the trend. Reports from the Daytona Beach News-Journal specify that leprosy has been reported in Volusia, adding to the broader surge across the Central Florida region. The situation has led to a variety of responses, including the formation of a leprosy support group initiated by a Florida woman to help those affected by the condition. Significant coverage of this health trend is appearing across multiple regional and national outlets.

WFTV and WESH have both reported on the rise of cases in Central Florida, with WESH noting that the increase is slight. News4JAX has emphasized that armadillos are likely the cause behind the surge, while AOL.com and Yahoo have focused on the emergence of a leprosy support group in the state. Additionally, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune has highlighted the efforts of women who want to change the current trajectory of the disease's spread within the state of Florida. Understanding this trend requires recognizing the link between wildlife and human transmission. According to Florida Today, scientists remain puzzled by the rising numbers, though other reports from AOL.com suggest that armadillos are contributing to the increase.

The geographic focus is primarily on Central Florida and Volusia, indicating a localized spike in a region where armadillos are common. This development is notable because leprosy is often perceived as a historical or distant health issue, yet it is actively spreading in a modern American context. Future developments will likely center on the ongoing efforts of the newly formed support groups and the findings of scientists who are still investigating the spike. Coverage from Florida Today and other regional sources will be critical in determining if the rise in cases continues or if mitigation strategies are implemented to reduce contact between humans and armadillos. The state of Florida continues to monitor the situation as the leprosy support group grows and more reports emerge from affected areas like Volusia.
