# NHL’s 10 worst contracts, 2026 edition: Jonathan Huberdeau (again), Leo Carlsson and more

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-23 21:07 UTC · Category: Sports

## Executive Summary
NHL analysts and media outlets are debating the league's most burdensome player contracts for 2026, with Jonathan Huberdeau and Leo Carlsson among the most cited.

## Intelligence Brief
Current reports from The New York Times and other sports outlets have identified the ten worst contracts in the NHL for the 2026 edition. Jonathan Huberdeau, a former star for the Panthers, has once again topped the list of the league's most problematic deals. Other players highlighted in these assessments include Leo Carlsson, whose contract is being scrutinized based on the numbers, and Alex Tuch, who is now with the Capitals after exiting the Sabres. The lists also focus on recent financial commitments, with Yahoo Sports and The Big Lead specifically examining the five worst contracts handed out within the last year. Coverage from a variety of specialized outlets emphasizes different aspects of these financial burdens.

The Edmonton Journal reports on an expert's claim that the Edmonton Oilers possess two of the worst contracts in the league, though the outlet notes a disagreement with that specific assessment. Within that context, Yahoo Sports has detailed the criticism surrounding Trent Frederic's contract with the Oilers, which is valued at $30.8 million and has been described by some as a complete anchor. Meanwhile, Sabre Noise focuses on Alex Tuch's ranking on the worst contracts list following his move to the Capitals, while Stars and Sticks attributes the Tuch listing to a trusted pundit. This trend highlights the ongoing struggle teams face with long-term financial commitments and player performance. For instance, Flame for Thought reports that a veteran with the Calgary Flames has received the dubious honor of being on a worst-contracts list for the third straight season.

These rankings matter because high-value contracts for underperforming players can limit a team's salary cap flexibility and hinder their ability to acquire new talent. The repeated inclusion of players like Huberdeau suggests a persistent gap between their current output and the financial terms of their agreements. Observers will likely monitor whether the teams mentioned, specifically the Edmonton Oilers and the Washington Capitals, attempt to mitigate these financial risks through trades or other maneuvers. Further analysis from Dose.ca suggests that the numbers regarding Leo Carlsson's deal remain a primary point of contention. Since several outlets are focusing on contracts handed out in the last year, the industry is watching for how these newer deals will age compared to the long-standing issues surrounding veteran players who have appeared on these lists multiple times.
