# Pirates Acquire Ron Marinaccio, Designate Dennis Santana For Assignment

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-23 22:07 UTC · Category: Sports

## Executive Summary
The Pittsburgh Pirates have restructured their bullpen by acquiring veteran reliever Ron Marinaccio and designating Dennis Santana for assignment.

## Intelligence Brief
The Pittsburgh Pirates have executed two significant roster moves to alter their pitching staff. According to reports from MLB.com and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the team has acquired right-handed pitcher Ron Marinaccio from the San Diego Padres. This acquisition is specifically linked to international signing bonus pool considerations. Simultaneously, the Pirates have designated Dennis Santana for assignment. As noted by NBC Sports and WTAE, this move effectively ends Santana's tenure with the organization, as the team seeks to reorganize its relief options and add veteran depth to the current bullpen rotation.

Extensive coverage of these transactions has been provided by major sports outlets including ESPN, Yahoo Sports, and MLB Trade Rumors. These reports emphasize the shift in the Pirates' strategy, with Yahoo Sports specifically highlighting the addition of Marinaccio as a means of bolstering bullpen depth. The nature of the move involving Dennis Santana is described by WKBN.com as the cutting of a former closer. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and MLB.com focus on the technical exchange between the Pirates and the Padres, noting the specific role of Marinaccio as a right-handed relief option for the Pittsburgh squad. Contextual reports suggest these moves are part of a larger strategic shuffle within the team's roster.

TribLIVE.com links these developments to an ongoing watch of Mason Miller, while Bucs Dugout explicitly states that the organization has been dealing with a "Dennis Santana problem." The timing of these moves is critical for teams looking to shore up their pitching; for instance, Sports Illustrated and Yahoo Sports have both highlighted that the Washington Nationals may need to claim the designated-for-assignment reliever, Santana, to strengthen their own bullpen performance as the season progresses. Looking forward, the primary focus remains on how Ron Marinaccio integrates into the Pirates' bullpen and the eventual destination of Dennis Santana. Because Santana has been designated for assignment, other MLB teams have the opportunity to claim him. Coverage from Sports Illustrated suggests the Nationals are a potential candidate for this claim. Additionally, the impact of the international signing bonus pool considerations mentioned by MLB.com may influence how the Pirates manage their roster and signing budgets in the coming months as they finalize their current seasonal strategy.
