The brief

The Baltimore Ravens have officially waived rookie quarterback Diego Pavia, according to reports from the Baltimore Ravens organization and multiple news outlets. According to ESPN, the decision to cut Pavia was specifically made to create roster space for Ethan Pocic. The New York Times reports that this transaction leaves the Ravens with four quarterbacks remaining on their roster, meaning Pavia will no longer be part of the quarterback room led by Lamar Jackson, as noted by CBS Sports. Extensive coverage from Yahoo Sports, USA Today, and NBC Sports emphasizes the unexpected nature of this release given Pavia's pedigree. He is identified as a former Vanderbilt quarterback and a Heisman Trophy finalist, with WBAL-TV and the Chicago Sun-Times specifying that he was the 2025 Heisman runner-up.

Coverage from The Tennessean and Cleveland.com highlights that the release happened just days before the team was set to begin its camp activities. Some reports from Yahoo Sports also mention fan reactions, with some suggesting the move was related to the team's desire to stop paying the player. Contextually, Pavia's transition from college to the professional level has been swift. As a standout at Vanderbilt, his status as a top Heisman contender made him a high-profile addition to the Ravens' roster. However, the roster churn in the NFL often necessitates cutting young talent to make room for established veterans like Pocic.

His release now places him back in the player pool as a free agent, sparking immediate speculation regarding his professional viability and whether he can find a home on another NFL roster before the season begins. Looking forward, several outlets are tracking potential landing spots for the rookie. Yahoo Sports has floated the Los Angeles Chargers and the Detroit Lions as possible destinations, while other coverage mentions an unnamed NFC contender as an ideal fit. Sports Illustrated has analyzed three potential landing spots for the quarterback. Additionally, Yahoo Sports has raised the question of whether Pavia could potentially return to Vanderbilt, though coverage does not yet specify if such a move is legally or administratively possible at this stage.
