# College Football 2026 Quarterback Rankings: Every Power 4 Starter From 68 to 1

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-07-27 20:07 UTC · Category: Sports

## Executive Summary
Sports media outlets are releasing comprehensive preseason rankings for every Power 4 starting quarterback heading into the 2026 college football season.

## Intelligence Brief
The primary focus of this trend is the ranking of starting quarterbacks across the Power 4 conferences. Sports Illustrated has released an extensive list that ranks every Power 4 starter, numbering them from 68 down to 1. This comprehensive approach seeks to establish a definitive hierarchy for the position before the official start of the 2026 season. Other outlets are similarly focused on the quarterback position, with Buffalo News specifically questioning who currently stands as the best quarterback in the collegiate game. Coverage from diverse media entities emphasizes different metrics and grouping strategies. On3 is providing a comparative analysis that looks at quarterback tiers alongside Strength of Schedule, or SOS, to provide a more nuanced view of the rankings.

Meanwhile, On the Banks reports that The Athletic has also published its own rankings of all starting quarterbacks. The New York Times is taking a narrower approach, focusing on ten specific rising quarterbacks who have the potential to make a significant jump in the rankings over the course of the upcoming season. Together, these outlets are creating a multifaceted profile of the current state of the position. This trend matters now because the 2026 preseason represents a critical evaluation period where analysts attempt to predict performance and identify breakout stars. The inclusion of all 68 Power 4 starters in the Sports Illustrated list indicates a desire for total coverage of the elite level of collegiate play. By categorizing players into tiers, as seen in the On3 reporting, analysts are attempting to distinguish between established stars and those who are merely expected to be competent.

The focus on SOS suggests that the difficulty of the opponents will be a primary lens through which these quarterbacks are judged as the season progresses. Moving forward, observers will be watching to see if the ten rising players identified by The New York Times actually achieve the projected jumps in their standing. Further updates will likely follow as the season begins and the actual performance of the 68 ranked Power 4 starters is compared against these preseason projections. Because the rankings from Sports Illustrated, The Athletic, and Buffalo News establish a baseline for expectations, any significant deviation in on-field performance will likely trigger a re-evaluation of the tiers and SOS metrics currently being discussed by On3 and other sports intelligence sources.
