## Executive Summary
The iconic Jodrell Bank Observatory faces potential closure by 2028 following major science funding cuts from the STFC.

## Intelligence Brief
The Jodrell Bank Observatory, a landmark scientific facility in Shropshire, is facing a critical funding crisis that threatens its continued operation. According to multiple reports, including coverage from the BBC and The Guardian, the observatory is facing the prospect of closure after its primary funders cut support. This financial shortfall specifically affects the e-Merlin project, as noted by The University of Manchester in its response to the UKRI/STFC funding announcement. If new funding sources are not identified and secured, observations at the site could potentially come to an end by April 2028. Extensive reporting from diverse outlets highlights the scale of the threat.

The Financial Times reports that the observatory is set to lose scientific funding, while Research Professional News confirms that the STFC has officially confirmed these cuts. Local coverage from About Manchester and the Shropshire Star emphasizes that this landmark telescope is under direct threat. The Irish Sun further describes the facility as a famous UK space attraction and a UNESCO site that may be forced to close its doors after seventy years of scientific service to the global community. Contextual details provided in the coverage underscore the significance of the facility's status. Because Jodrell Bank is recognized as a UNESCO site, the potential loss of its operational capacity represents a blow to both national science and international heritage.

The University of Manchester is actively responding to the UKRI/STFC e-Merlin funding announcement, indicating that the institution is attempting to address the gap created by the STFC's decision to reduce financial support for the telescope's scientific endeavors. Future developments depend on whether the funding gap can be bridged before the projected deadline. The primary timeline to watch is the April 2028 cutoff, by which point observations may cease if new funding is not found. Stakeholders will be monitoring the ongoing response from The University of Manchester and any potential interventions by the UKRI or STFC to prevent the closure of this iconic Shropshire facility and its associated scientific operations.
