## Executive Summary
Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti is countering rumors of a breakaway from the SEC while advocating for a 24-team College Football Playoff by 2027.

## Intelligence Brief
Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti has publicly addressed the current state of collegiate athletics, specifically pushing back against discussions regarding a potential 'breakaway' from the SEC. These statements come during Big Ten media days, where the league's leadership and key figures are discussing the future of the sport's structure. Petitti is emphasizing a desire for a 24-team College Football Playoff to be implemented by the year 2027. This push for expansion is mirrored by other figures in the sport, including Lincoln Riley, who has also expressed a desire to see the playoff expand to a 24-team format. Coverage of these developments is being led by several major outlets, including ESPN, Yahoo Sports, and The Seattle Times.

Reports from ESPN specifically highlight Petitti's reiteration of the goal for a 2027 timeline for the 24-team playoff. Meanwhile, 247Sports has provided video coverage of the commissioner discussing both the playoff expansion and the Big Ten's relationship with the SEC. TribLIVE.com has added a specific operational detail to this narrative, noting that the Big Ten would not hold a league championship game if the college football system officially moves to a 24-team playoff structure. The context of these discussions centers on the evolving relationship between the two most powerful conferences in the country. The 'breakaway' talks mentioned by The Seattle Times suggest a potential schism or a separate arrangement between the Big Ten and the SEC that would alter the current landscape of college football.

The shift toward a larger playoff field, specifically the 24-team model, represents a significant departure from previous postseason formats and would necessitate changes to how conference champions are determined, as seen with the proposed removal of the Big Ten championship game. Looking forward, the focus remains on whether the 2027 target for a 24-team playoff will be met and how the Big Ten continues to navigate its partnership with the SEC. Observers will be watching for further official statements from the SEC regarding the 'breakaway' rumors and the potential for a revised playoff format. Additionally, the implementation of the 24-team playoff would trigger a concrete change in the Big Ten's scheduling and postseason logistics, specifically regarding the status of its league championship game, as indicated in recent reports.
