## Executive Summary
Researchers have identified a new 'beefy' bird-like dinosaur genus in New Mexico, correcting a classification error that lasted twelve years.

## Intelligence Brief
Researchers have officially identified a new dinosaur species originating from New Mexico. According to reports from Source New Mexico and the Santa Fe New Mexican, the discovery took place in San Juan County, located in the northwestern part of the state. This new genus belongs to the Troodontid family, characterized by a bird-like appearance. Source New Mexico specifically describes the creature as being 'beefy' compared to other members of its lineage. The identification process was a collaborative effort involving New Mexico scientists, as detailed by KOAT and other local news outlets. Extensive coverage from multiple sources highlights the unusual journey of the fossil bone used for this identification.

Sci.News reports that the bone was actually found decades ago, meaning the physical specimen had been available long before the new genus was formally named. Furthermore, the WGAL report specifies that the fossils were housed at the Pennsylvania State Museum. This indicates that while the dinosaur lived in New Mexico, the critical physical evidence required for the scientific analysis was stored and preserved in a different state until the current identification occurred. The context of this discovery involves a significant period of scientific misidentification. The Albuquerque Journal notes that the identification of this new species comes after a '12-year mix-up,' suggesting that the fossils were previously categorized as a different type of dinosaur for over a decade. This correction underscores the importance of ongoing re-evaluation of existing museum collections.

The discovery is being reported widely across regional and national platforms, including WKRN News 2, KOB 4, KRQE, and WOODTV.com, all confirming that researchers have now successfully pinpointed the animal's unique place in the prehistoric record. Moving forward, the scientific community will focus on the implications of this Troodontid discovery. Since the fossils were located in the Pennsylvania State Museum despite the animal's origin in San Juan County, future research may involve further analysis of these specific remains to better understand the anatomy of this 'beefy' bird-like dinosaur. While the coverage does not specify immediate next steps for the researchers, the correction of the twelve-year classification error establishes a new baseline for understanding the dinosaur populations that once existed in northwestern New Mexico.
