## Executive Summary
ESPN is reportedly floating a 16-team College Football Playoff expansion featuring four play-in games as part of broader format discussions.

## Intelligence Brief
ESPN is currently socializing a proposal for a 16-team College Football Playoff format that would incorporate four play-in games, according to reporting from Awful Announcing. This development comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding the expansion of the tournament. While the 16-team model is being discussed, other reports from The New York Times indicate that the financial value of a larger 24-team College Football Playoff is also under scrutiny, with a key answer regarding those valuation figures expected to arrive this fall. Coverage of the expansion talks is being tracked across several major outlets. On3 reports that expansion conversations are continuing and notes that TV consultants are expected to present data to help guide the decision-making process.

Simultaneously, The New York Times is examining the specific motivations and desires of Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti regarding the shifting landscape of the playoff. These reports collectively show a divide in proposed scale, ranging from the 16-team play-in model to a much larger 24-team field. Contextual analysis from The Mercury News highlights the specific stakes for the Group of Six. The outlet questions whether a 24-team field is the correct path for these programs, suggesting that there are inherent benefits to maintaining the status quo. This creates a tension between the desire for greater expansion and the potential downsides for certain tiers of college football.

The broader conversation is driven by a mix of financial incentives and the logistical data provided by television consultants. Observers are now waiting for several specific milestones to occur. The New York Times states that a critical answer regarding the worth of a 24-team playoff will be available this fall. Additionally, the outcomes of the data presentations from TV consultants, as noted by On3, will likely influence whether the 16-team format with play-in games or a larger 24-team structure becomes the primary focus. The role of conference leadership, specifically Tony Petitti of the Big Ten, remains a key point of interest in the coming months.
