## Executive Summary
The Boston Red Sox suffered a series loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates following a decision to bench Ceddanne Rafaela for the opener.

## Intelligence Brief
The Boston Red Sox traveled to Pittsburgh for a series against the Pirates that culminated in a series loss for the visiting team. A key focal point of the series onset was a notable decision regarding Ceddanne Rafaela, who sat out of the lineup as the weekend series began. This decision was highlighted in reports from NESN and MassLive.com. The series finale was marked by a lengthy weather delay and rain-soaked conditions, which eventually saw the Pirates secure a victory. Final score reports varied slightly across outlets, with ESPN reporting an 8-4 win for Pittsburgh and dkpittsburghsports.com recording a final score of 8-3 in favor of the Pirates. Coverage from the Boston Herald and MLB.com emphasizes the nature of the defeat, with the Herald stating that Patrick Sandoval and the Red Sox were pummeled.

MLB.com noted that the Pirates erupted for seven early runs to secure a needed series win. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette characterized the winning Pirates lineup as unlikely, noting that the victory marked the team's first series win in weeks. These reports collectively underscore a dominant performance by the Pittsburgh offense during the rainy series finale, contrasting with the struggles of the Boston pitching staff. Contextual reporting from MassLive.com provides insight into the Red Sox pitching rotation, noting that Sonny Gray has quietly taken over the role of staff ace. This shift has occurred in the absence of Garrett Crochet. Additionally, reports from Over the Monster mentioned that the Red Sox were looking forward to the series with the return of Greg Weissert and the opportunity to face Paul Skenes, who was described as shaky.

The series occurred around Game 123 of the season, with logistics and viewing information provided by The Boston Globe and FOX Sports prior to the matchup. Looking ahead, the coverage indicates that the Pirates have broken a multi-week drought of series wins. For the Red Sox, the focus remains on the performance of their pitching staff and the management of their lineup, specifically regarding the usage of players like Ceddanne Rafaela. Observers will likely monitor whether the Red Sox can stabilize their rotation in the continued absence of Garrett Crochet and how the Pirates maintain the momentum generated by their early-run eruption in the series finale against Boston.
