> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-08-17 20:07 UTC · Category: Sports

## Executive Summary
The Washington Commanders have released placekicker Jake Moody, awarding the starting role to undrafted rookie Drew Stevens.

## Intelligence Brief
This roster move effectively ends Moody's tenure with the team. In his place, the organization has tapped Drew Stevens to take over the kicking duties. Stevens enters the role as an undrafted rookie, securing the starting job following a period of evaluation and competition within the team's special teams unit. Multiple major news organizations are covering the development. The Washington Post and The New York Times both confirm the release of Moody and the subsequent promotion of Stevens.

ESPN specifically notes that the decision follows a period where Moody was struggling in his role as the placekicker. Additionally, NBC Sports has reported on the release, and Niners Wire highlighted the move by referencing Moody's previous status as a third-round pick for the San Francisco 49ers. Context provided by the coverage indicates that Moody's professional trajectory has been difficult. Niners Wire characterizes him as a failed third-round pick from his time with the 49ers, suggesting a pattern of instability or underperformance that preceded his arrival and departure in Washington. The shift to Drew Stevens represents a pivot toward an unproven rookie after the team determined that the veteran option was no longer viable for their immediate needs.

Future attention will be focused on the performance of Drew Stevens as he assumes the starting kicking position for the Commanders. The coverage establishes that Stevens has won the competition for the spot, but does not specify the length of his contract or the specific statistics that led to Moody's struggles. Observers will be watching to see if the undrafted rookie can provide the stability the team sought by cutting Moody.
