> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-08-17 17:07 UTC · Category: Sports

## Executive Summary
The NBA has reported a lack of evidence regarding allegations that Steve Ballmer used sponsors to funnel payments to Kawhi Leonard to bypass the salary cap.

## Intelligence Brief
The National Basketball Association is currently conducting an investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers concerning potential salary cap circumvention. Specifically, reports have surfaced regarding whether team owner Steve Ballmer funneled money to star player Kawhi Leonard through third-party sponsors. According to reports from ESPN and Yahoo Sports, the league has found no evidence to support the claim that Ballmer provided these payments to Leonard. Both the NBA and the Clippers organization have addressed these reports as the investigation continues to unfold, as noted by Bleacher Report. Multiple sports outlets are closely tracking the developments of this probe. ESPN and Yahoo Sports have emphasized the lack of evidence regarding the funneling of money, while Hoops Rumors reports that the league's investigation has not found proof of cap circumvention.

The New York Times has highlighted that the NBA is actively disputing reports that detailed potential findings within the Clippers' probe. Additionally, BasketNews.com has characterized recent updates as a crucial new development in the ongoing process, and HoopsHype indicates that the league has presented initial findings. This situation is significant because salary cap rules are designed to maintain competitive balance across the league. The possibility of a team bypassing these rules via external payments would constitute a major violation. The severity of the potential situation is underscored by reactions from other league figures; Basketball Network reports that Tim Hardaway has predicted serious punishment for both Steve Ballmer and Kawhi Leonard, stating that Leonard is in trouble. Similarly, thescore.com reports that Draymond Green has called for the total abolition of the salary cap as part of the punishment for Leonard.

Future developments will depend on the conclusion of the NBA's official investigation. While initial findings presented by the league have not confirmed the allegations, the NBA continues to dispute specific reports about the probe's findings. Observers are waiting to see if further evidence emerges that could contradict the current lack of proof reported by ESPN and Yahoo Sports. The focus remains on whether the league will issue any formal sanctions or if the case will be closed without penalty for the Clippers organization or Kawhi Leonard.
