## Executive Summary
A heated joint preseason drill between the Chargers and 49ers sparks coach jabs, defensive doubts and a roster puzzle ahead of Thursday’s matchup.

## Intelligence Brief
The Los Angeles Chargers and San Francisco 49ers held a joint preseason practice on Thursday, a session that generated vivid commentary across multiple outlets. A Chargers rookie described the drill as having "torn up" the 49ers' defense, while head coaches Kyle Shanahan and Robert Saleh exchanged sharp remarks, with Shanahan reportedly roasting Saleh. Both teams also identified several players to watch, with five 49ers and five Chargers highlighted for the upcoming preseason game. Coverage of the practice spanned a range of media. The New York Post led with a piece on Shanahan’s roast of Saleh, while Yahoo Sports published two stories: one relaying the rookie’s claim of defensive disruption and another listing five 49ers players to watch in Week 2.

Additional analysis appeared in the San Francisco 49ers Morning Report and ninerswire.usatoday.com, which highlighted Shanahan’s surprising personnel decision for the second preseason game. The joint practice fits into the broader preseason schedule where teams evaluate depth and scheme fit before the regular season. Coaches Shanahan and Saleh are known for adjusting lineups based on early performance, and the decision to play "a number" of starters suggests a strategic balance between assessment and injury risk. Defensive vulnerabilities were a focal point, with The New York Times pointing to cracks despite Osa Odighizuwa’s heroics, indicating that the 49ers’ secondary may be a key area of scrutiny. The practice also set the stage for the Week 2 preseason matchup, a game that will further inform roster cuts and starting roles.

Looking ahead, Thursday’s preseason contest will be the first public test of the adjustments hinted at during the joint drill. Observers will track starter usage, especially Justin Herbert’s performance and the impact of the five highlighted Chargers. The 49ers’ defensive response to the earlier “torn up” assessment will also be under the microscope, as will any further comments from Shanahan, Saleh or Purdy that could signal strategic shifts before the regular season begins.
