## Executive Summary
Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kubiak is keeping the starting quarterback position open between Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza heading into Week 1.

## Intelligence Brief
Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak has declined to name a starting quarterback for the team's opening game. According to reports from ESPN, CBS Sports, and NBC Sports, Kubiak has kept the competition open, stating that the team has another week to evaluate their options. The race for the starting role primarily involves veteran Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza. While some reports from Yahoo Sports suggest a timeline for the position could accelerate based on Mendoza's performance, the coaching staff has not yet committed to either player for the first game of the season. Coverage from Yahoo Sports and CBS Sports emphasizes the volatility surrounding Fernando Mendoza's current standing. Following a lackluster outing against the Texans, Mendoza faced significant criticism, including mockery from NFL fans regarding a bad interception.

Yahoo Sports specifically highlighted comments from Aaron Rodgers' brother, who stated that Mendoza should not step on the field until he is ready. Despite these struggles, other reports from Yahoo Sports note that Mendoza possesses a level of experience that he can rely on within the Raiders' quarterbacks room as he competes for the job. This situation arrives amidst a broader landscape of quarterback transitions across football. While the Raiders remain undecided, other programs have made definitive moves. AP News and CBS Sports report that Tennessee head coach Heupel has named five-star true freshman Faizon Brandon as the starting quarterback for No. 20 Tennessee. Brandon faces a daunting SEC slate in 2026, a move that has drawn attention from Rocky Top Insider and Yahoo Sports, the latter of which noted the history of quarterbacks who have worn the No. 11 jersey at Tennessee.

Moving forward, observers will monitor Klint Kubiak's final decision as the Week 1 deadline approaches. The Raiders' decision-making process regarding Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza remains the central focus, as indicated by reporting from Heavy.com and the Fantasy Footballers Podcast. Silver And Black Pride suggests that Kubiak's influence is already evident in the team's approach. Whether the team sticks with the veteran Cousins or allows the younger Mendoza to take the lead will depend on the evaluations conducted during the final week of preparation.
