## Executive Summary
The Bishop of Lourdes mandates the permanent covering of Rupnik mosaics and bans SSPX liturgies ahead of a papal visit to France.

## Intelligence Brief
Recent coverage from outlets including Aleteia, The Catholic Herald, Infovaticana, OSV News, National Catholic Reporter, EWTN News, and ZENIT details significant liturgical and architectural changes at the Lourdes Shrine. According to these reports, the Bishop of Lourdes has decided that all mosaics created by Rupnik will be covered before the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to France. Furthermore, the reports indicate that these mosaics will remain masked indefinitely, and the shrine plans to commission entirely new works of art for the basilica. Alongside the decisions regarding the artwork, the coverage highlights a concurrent administrative action affecting the Sanctuary. The Bishop of Lourdes has officially withdrawn the authorization for the Society of St.

Pius X, also referred to as the SSPX or Lefebvrist priests, to celebrate Masses and administer sacraments at the pilgrimage site. This ban prevents the group from holding their annual pilgrimage liturgies and sacramental celebrations within the shrine's boundaries, marking a notable shift in access for the traditionalist priestly society. These developments emerge directly in the context of the anticipated papal journey to France, framing the sanctuary's operational and aesthetic preparations for the pontiff. The removal of the SSPX's privileges and the masking of controversial artwork represent major concurrent policy enactments by local church leadership at a globally significant Marian shrine. While the coverage outlines the actions taken by the bishop regarding both the Rupnik installations and the traditionalist clergy, specific details about the exact dates of the papal itinerary or the artists chosen for the new basilica works are not fully elaborated in the current reports.

Observers and interested parties are tracking the unfolding situation through the aforementioned Catholic news organizations as the preparations for the papal visit continue. Coverage does not yet specify the broader reactions from the SSPX leadership regarding the sacramental ban, nor does it provide a precise timeline for the unveiling of the newly commissioned basilica artwork. Future updates from these reporting outlets are expected to monitor the physical alterations to the shrine and the implementation of the liturgical restrictions as the event approaches.
