# Sick of Constant Pings, They’re Sending Texts at the Speed of Carrier Pigeon

## Executive Summary
Users are rejecting instant notifications for a new wave of apps that simulate the slow, unpredictable pace of carrier pigeon messaging.

## Intelligence Brief
A new trend in communication is emerging as users adopt apps that simulate the delivery of messages via carrier pigeon. One such application, Roost, allows users to send texts that do not arrive instantly but instead travel at a simulated speed of 100mph. According to reports from Tom's Hardware, the delivery time for correspondence traveling from Los Angeles to New York City takes approximately 22 hours. This system introduces intentional delays and risks, as the virtual birds used for delivery can become distracted, get lost, or, as Inshorts reports, sometimes die during the transit process. Coverage of this phenomenon is widespread across several major outlets. The New York Times highlights a growing fatigue regarding constant digital pings, while USA Today has provided a review of the Roost app.

Gadget Review and Creative Bloq describe the software as a viral alternative to the 'dumbphone' movement. Gizmodo has characterized the appeal of these apps by suggesting that 'pigeon technology' is actually superior to current instant messaging norms. These reports collectively frame the movement as a reaction against the immediacy of modern technology, emphasizing the deliberate slowness of the experience. The context for this trend involves a desire to escape the pressure of immediate responsiveness. The apps are described by Tom's Hardware as the work of a 'rogue iOS developer' who created a simulation of avian transport. Inshorts notes that the flying speed of these virtual pigeons is not constant and can vary by as much as 25%.

By introducing these variables—such as flight speed fluctuations and the possibility of message loss—the technology forces users to accept a pace of communication that mirrors historical methods rather than the instantaneous nature of traditional SMS or internet-based messaging. Future attention will likely focus on whether other developers follow the lead of the Roost creator. Based on the current coverage, the primary points of interest include how users react to the total loss of messages when virtual birds die or get lost. Observers are monitoring the viral growth of these apps as mentioned by Creative Bloq to see if this remains a niche simulation or grows into a broader behavioral shift. The specific mechanics of the 100mph speed limit and the potential for distraction remain the defining technical constraints of the service as documented by Tom's Hardware and Inshorts.
