## Executive Summary
The Chicago Bears face a preseason reality check after their starting defense struggled against the Cincinnati Bengals' backup players.

## Intelligence Brief
Specifically, coverage from the Chicago Sun-Times highlights that the Bears' starting defense did not hold up well when facing the Bengals' backup players during the contest. The game served as a critical evaluation period for the roster, though the outcome was a loss for the Chicago side, leading to a detailed analysis of the team's failures on the field. Multiple outlets are focusing on the fallout of this performance, with Yahoo Sports describing the event as an ugly preseason reality check. Yahoo Sports further provided a report card to grade the specific contributions and failures of the Chicago players throughout the loss to the Bengals.

Additionally, the Chicago Tribune featured ten thoughts from Brad Biggs, who noted that Ben Johnson gave the starting players a cameo appearance during the game. The combined coverage emphasizes a disconnect between the expected performance of the starters and the actual results against a secondary unit. This trend is significant because it provides a window into the current state of the Bears' defensive readiness prior to the regular season. The focus on the starting defense's inability to dominate backup players suggests systemic issues or a lack of cohesion that the coaching staff must address.

Ben Johnson has reportedly sounded an alarm following the game, indicating that the performance was not merely a typical preseason slump but a warning sign of deeper problems that could impact the team's success in upcoming competitive matchups. Looking forward, the focus remains on how the Bears adjust their defensive strategies after this reality check. Future coverage will likely track whether the issues identified in the report card from Yahoo Sports are rectified in subsequent practices. Observers will be watching for Ben Johnson's specific corrections to the starting unit to ensure that the struggles against the Bengals' backups do not translate into vulnerabilities against starting offensive units in the regular season.
