## Executive Summary
UAW members at John Deere have rejected a proposal to extend their collective bargaining agreement through 2029, ensuring a labor confrontation in 2027.

## Intelligence Brief
United Auto Workers (UAW) members employed at John Deere have voted to reject a proposal from the company to extend their current collective bargaining agreement. According to reports from TradingView, the rejected offer would have extended the existing contract through the year 2029. The vote took place on Sunday, as noted by coverage from agronews.com and AgWeb. Following the failure of the extension vote, a statement from John Deere confirmed that both the company and the union will return to the negotiations table in 2027. This outcome ensures that the current labor agreement will expire, setting the stage for a renewed battle over contract terms in the coming years. Multiple regional and national outlets have tracked the developments, with the Wall Street Journal characterizing the rejection as a setup for a 2027 battle.

Local reports from KCCI, KCRG, KWWL, and KWQC all confirmed that the members voted against the extension. KWWL specifically highlights a tension between the company's financial performance and its operational decisions, noting that members said no to the deal amid $5 billion in profit and the occurrence of layoffs. This indicates a significant gap between the corporate financial standing of John Deere and the satisfaction of the UAW workforce regarding the proposed extension terms. Contextual reporting from Axios suggests that this labor friction is occurring during an AI sales boom, which adds a layer of economic complexity to the dispute. The UAW's refusal to lock in a contract until 2029 suggests that workers may be seeking to capture a larger share of the gains resulting from these technological advancements and profits. The rejection of an early extension means the union is opting to wait for the original contract expiration rather than accepting the terms Deere sought to implement.

This puts the company in a position where it must now prepare for formal negotiations in 2027 without the stability of a long-term agreement. Looking ahead, the primary focus will be the return to the bargaining table in 2027. Since the contract extension failed, coverage indicates that the parties are now on a trajectory toward a standard renegotiation cycle. Observers will likely monitor how the company's profit margins and the ongoing AI sales boom influence the UAW's demands when the time comes to negotiate. For now, the status quo of the current collective bargaining agreement remains in effect until its scheduled expiration, and no further extension votes have been reported by the outlets covering the story.
