## Executive Summary
Rep. Byron Donalds links a Florida measles outbreak to illegal immigration, sparking a conflict with CDC data and media critics.

## Intelligence Brief
Florida gubernatorial candidate and GOP representative Byron Donalds has attributed a recent measles outbreak in Florida to what he describes as rampant illegal immigration. This claim was central to a high-profile exchange during an appearance on Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan on August 23, 2026. Donalds suggested that the influx of undocumented individuals is driving the spread of the disease. However, multiple reports indicate that data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not support the claim that illegal immigration is the cause of the outbreaks. This tension between the representative's public statements and official health data has become a focal point of recent news coverage. Several news outlets have emphasized the discrepancy between Donalds' assertions and available evidence.

WINK News, WEAR-TV, and PolitiFact have explicitly stated that there is no evidence linking illegal immigration to the measles outbreaks, citing CDC data to refute the representative's comments. WBAL-TV and KCRA also reported that no such link has been established. Additionally, the conflict extended to other media platforms, where an MSNBC contributor attempted to corner Donalds regarding his own views on vaccinations, asking if he vaccinates his children. The coverage across these outlets highlights a sharp divide between the political narrative presented by Donalds and the scientific data provided by federal health agencies. This situation is occurring within the context of Donalds' candidacy for governor of Florida and his broader stance on public health mandates. According to reports from WPEC, Donalds has expressed support for parents' choice and indicated that he will not rush to repeal Florida's existing vaccine mandates.

Furthermore, Yahoo reported that Donalds believes it makes sense to spread out the vaccine schedule. Florida Politics notes that he plans to study potential rollbacks for the Polio and MMR vaccines and intends to engage with the state Legislature before reaching a final decision on these health policies. Future developments will likely center on Donalds' interactions with the Florida Legislature regarding vaccine policy. The coverage indicates that his final decisions on Polio and MMR vaccine rollbacks are still pending. Observers will be monitoring whether he modifies his stance on the cause of the measles outbreak in light of the CDC data highlighted by PolitiFact and other outlets. The ongoing debate over vaccine schedules and parental choice in Florida remains a key element of his gubernatorial platform, as he continues to evaluate the balance between legislative action and current health mandates.
