## Executive Summary
An Ebola Bundibugyo virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has expanded to 60 affected areas, sparking an urgent vaccination campaign.

## Intelligence Brief
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is currently facing an Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak centered in the eastern region of the country. According to reports from Al Jazeera, PBS, and AP News, the virus has recently spread into two additional health zones. This expansion brings the total number of affected areas to 60. In response to the escalating health crisis, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has initiated a vaccination program specifically targeting health workers, as reported by Reuters. Coverage of the event is widespread across international news agencies and health organizations.

ABC News describes this particular outbreak as the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history. The World Health Organization (WHO) has convened the second meeting of the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee to address the epidemic of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease. These reports emphasize the rapid geographic spread of the virus across the eastern Congo and the urgent need for medical countermeasures to protect frontline workers. Context for the current situation is provided through various lenses, including a report from The Irish Times which examines the nature of Ebola and whether cases have appeared in Europe. The focus on the Bundibugyo strain of the virus is a critical detail in the current public health response.

The scale of the outbreak, now impacting 60 distinct areas, necessitates the high-level emergency coordination currently being managed by the WHO's IHR Emergency Committee to prevent further transmission. Future developments to monitor include the results of the WHO Emergency Committee meeting and the progress of the vaccination rollout for health workers. Because the outbreak is characterized by ABC News as the fastest-growing in history, the trajectory of the virus into new health zones remains a primary point of concern. Continued reporting will likely focus on whether the vaccination efforts can stabilize the spread across the 60 currently affected areas in the eastern region of the DRC.
