A South Texas school district has canceled classes following a surge in COVID-19 cases, coinciding with a broader state-level increase reported by the CDC.

## Intelligence Brief
The San Perlita Independent School District in South Texas has taken the decision to cancel classes as a direct response to the spread of COVID-19. This local action follows a reported surge of the virus within the community. In addition to the cancellation of classes, the school district has issued a specific directive to parents, urging them to keep students who are feeling sick at home to prevent further transmission within the educational environment. These events indicate a localized crisis causing immediate disruptions to the academic calendar in the region. Coverage of this event is being led by several regional and state-level outlets.

KSAT has reported on the specific cancellation of classes within the South Texas school district, while ValleyCentral.com focused on the communications from San Perlita ISD regarding the management of sick students. Meanwhile, the Houston Chron has contextualized these local events by reporting on a wider trend across the state. According to the Chron, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that COVID-19 is creeping back across Texas, suggesting that the situation in San Perlita is not an isolated incident. The broader context of this trend is rooted in the latest public health data from the CDC. The reports emphasize that the virus is seeing a resurgence across the state of Texas.

This state-wide increase in cases provides the backdrop for why a local school district would feel compelled to implement drastic measures such as canceling classes. The timing of this surge highlights the ongoing volatility of the virus and the continued susceptibility of school populations to outbreaks, making the situation a matter of public health concern for the surrounding South Texas communities. Moving forward, the situation remains dependent on the trajectory of the virus as monitored by health officials. Observers will be watching for further updates from the San Perlita Independent School District regarding when classes will resume and whether other districts in South Texas will implement similar cancellations. Additionally, the reports suggest a need to monitor the CDC's ongoing data for Texas to determine if the current creep of COVID-19 will lead to wider mandates or more widespread school closures across the state in the coming weeks.
