## Executive Summary
Children in Ukraine go underground as the new school year begins under constant Russian missile strikes and air raid alerts.

## Intelligence Brief
According to coverage from outlets including CNN, AP News, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, the new school year began with children going underground into bomb shelters and taking classes beneath the surface. Coverage from The Kyiv Independent notes that students heard air raid sirens instead of the traditional first bell on their opening day. Yahoo and other sources report that Kyiv Oblast authorities urged schools to avoid mass celebrations marking the start of the school year. Meanwhile, reporting by Ukrinform and UA.NEWS details that President Zelensky visited a school in the Kyiv region and publicly criticized international partners and Europe for being on holiday, urging them to respond more actively to ongoing Russian attacks. Media organizations such as the Dayton Daily News, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and the Bluefield Daily Telegraph heavily emphasized the stark contrast of Knowledge Day celebrations proceeding in Russia while Ukrainian students were forced to shelter from overnight missile strikes.

AP News and several regional papers published photo documentation capturing pupils returning to school across both countries, while CARE and other organizations highlighted that while students are heading back to school in Ukraine, conditions are far from normal. Outlets like The New York Times specifically focused on children attending school underground, describing those able to do so as the lucky ones amidst the widespread disruptions. Context provided across the reporting indicates that these events mark the formal start of the academic term amid a backdrop of constant Russian fire and overnight missile strikes that shattered the first day of classes in the capital. The coverage shows that despite ongoing aerial threats, structural efforts are underway to accommodate students, with outlets noting that more than eight thousand schools opened for in-person learning across the country for the current year. However, regional authorities and national leadership emphasize that safety protocols, underground shelters, and restrictions on mass gatherings remain absolute necessities for protecting students from persistent military action.

Future developments to watch, based strictly on the provided reporting, include responses from international partners and European nations to the criticisms leveled by Ukrainian leadership regarding their perceived inactivity during these attacks. Further updates from Kyiv Oblast authorities and school administrations will determine whether additional educational facilities shift entirely to underground modalities or adjust their in-person learning schedules. The coverage does not yet specify long-term security adjustments for the thousands of newly opened schools or how international aid organizations plan to support ongoing educational operations under continuous air raids.
