# Leaders missing and China ‘furious’: the Pacific Islands forum off to a decidedly shaky start

## Executive Summary
The Pacific Islands Forum faces a shaky start as China issues warnings over Taiwan envoys attending the summit.

## Intelligence Brief
Palau is characterized in the reporting as having no traffic lights and a population of just 18,000 people, yet it now finds itself at the center of intense international friction. The situation escalated significantly after Taipei envoys attended the Pacific leaders summit. In response, China issued a direct warning of consequences for Taiwan regarding the attendance of its envoys at the gathering.

Multiple news organizations, specifically AP News, WOODTV.com, and ABC News, emphasize Beijing's strong reaction to the diplomatic presence of Taiwan at the regional event. Fortune notes the stark contrast between Palau's small scale—having no traffic lights and a population of only 18,000—and its sudden elevation to a frontline location for a U.S.-China standoff. The presence of Taipei envoys serves as the immediate catalyst for Beijing's warnings.

Looking ahead, coverage does not yet specify what concrete actions will follow China's warning of consequences or how the remaining forum sessions will handle the diplomatic fallout. Observers will need to monitor further reporting from the participating media outlets to see if missing leaders return to the summit and how Taiwan and Palau respond to the mounting pressure from Beijing.
