## Executive Summary
Peru severs diplomatic relations with Iran, citing regional tensions and the escalation of the Middle East war.

## Intelligence Brief
Recent international reporting shows that Peru has officially broken diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The announcement, confirmed by the foreign ministry and reported by outlets including news.cgtn.com, globaltimes.cn, and Anadolu Ajansı, involves accusations that Tehran's policies are escalating the ongoing Middle East conflict. Coverage specifically references regional tensions, human rights concerns, the Hormuz crisis, and alignment with United States anti-Iranian policy. Outlets such as Peru's andina.pe, Middle East Eye, and Iran International have detailed the diplomatic rupture, while IntelliNews notes that the move goes beyond bilateral relations with Tehran. Simultaneously, active military developments in Lebanon continue to generate heavy coverage. According to Reuters, the Israeli military reported striking southern Lebanon following drone launches by Hezbollah.

The Times of Israel documented urgent evacuation warnings issued by the Israel Defense Forces for Arab Salim in southern Lebanon ahead of planned strikes on Hezbollah targets. Al Jazeera reported that nearly 9,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon since 2023. Live updates are being tracked continuously by The Jerusalem Post, connecting these localized military engagements to the broader regional crisis involving Israel, Iran, and Lebanon. The context provided by the headlines links Peru's sudden diplomatic action directly to broader geopolitical struggles in the Middle East. Coverage notes that the severing of ties touches upon multiple overlapping factors, including the Hormuz crisis and regional warfare. While some sources frame the decision through the lens of international policies regarding Iran, others point to regional tensions as the driving motivation behind the foreign ministry's announcement.

The exact sequence of domestic deliberations inside Peru leading up to the foreign ministry's statement is not fully detailed in the current headlines, leaving the immediate background of the policy shift largely tied to external events. Future updates from outlets tracking the Middle East conflict will likely monitor further military exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. It remains to be seen whether other South American nations will follow Peru's diplomatic path regarding Iran. Coverage does not yet specify any retaliatory diplomatic measures from Tehran or whether consular operations will be affected following the rupture. Observers will continue following live updates from regional desks to track the interplay between diplomatic fallout in South America and active hostilities in Lebanon.
