## Executive Summary
A 'super' El Niño has intensified devastating wildfires in Indonesia, sending toxic haze across Southeast Asia and forcing millions of students online.

## Intelligence Brief
Widespread wildfires in Indonesia, driven by a 'super' El Niño, have released a toxic haze that is currently blanketing significant portions of Southeast Asia. According to reports from the BBC and NASA, these fires are particularly severe in peatlands and southern Borneo. The environmental crisis has reached a critical point, with the New York Times noting that the resulting haze has spread beyond Indonesian borders to impact the Philippines and Malaysia. In some regions, the pollution index has reached 1,023, which Tech Times identifies as the worst Kalimantan haze on record. This atmospheric degradation has led to severe disruptions, including the cancellation of flights to Melalan through September 5, as reported by Migrant Times. Major global outlets including Reuters, Bloomberg, and the South China Morning Post are emphasizing the immediate human and educational toll of the disaster. Coverage highlights that 1.4 million students have been forced to transition to online learning due to the air quality.

The ABC News & Headlines reports that the area currently burning in Indonesia is four times the size of Singapore. Al Jazeera describes a crisis where residents report that everything is covered in ash, while The Independent points to maps showing a surge in wildfire hotspots where both humans and orangutans are choking to death. This multifaceted crisis is being monitored by scientific agencies, with Eumetsat providing imagery of the fires in southern Borneo. Contextual reporting suggests that the disaster is not merely a natural occurrence but is linked to corporate activity. The Asia News Network reports that unchecked businesses are being blamed for the raging fires. This is reflected in governmental action, as Reuters reports that officials are currently inspecting 19 companies linked to the wildfires. The situation is compounded by the intensification of a 'super' El Niño, which The Guardian notes is fueling the destruction of precious Indonesian forests.

These peatland fires, as documented by NASA Earthdata throughout August 2026, create a persistent and dense smoke that resists standard containment efforts. Future developments will likely center on the results of the government inspections into the 19 implicated companies and the ongoing efforts of volunteers who Yahoo reports are fighting an uphill battle against the flames. Attention is also focused on the proximity of the fires to Indonesia's new capital, which has prompted urgent calls for action. Monitoring will continue regarding the flight status in Borneo and whether school closures and online learning mandates will extend beyond the current period. The trajectory of the 'super' El Niño will remain a primary factor in determining if the haze continues to expand across the region or if the pollution index in Kalimantan begins to subside.
