## Executive Summary
James Franklin makes a dominant debut as head coach of Virginia Tech, leading the Hokies to a historic 73-3 victory over VMI.

## Intelligence Brief
Virginia Tech opened its football season on Saturday night with a decisive 73-3 victory over the VMI Keydets. This game marked the official debut of James Franklin as the new head coach for the Hokies. According to reports from Virginia Tech Athletics, the team raced out to a significant early lead to secure the win. The Roanoke Times describes the performance as 'damn good,' noting that the result stands as the most lopsided loss in the history of the VMI program. The event was characterized as both a blowout and a party, as reported by David Teel in The Virginian-Pilot. Coverage from multiple outlets emphasizes the scale of the victory and the surrounding atmosphere.

On3.com highlighted the combination of the 'Enter Sandman' tradition, the 73 points scored, and the presence of top recruiting targets. Gobbler Country provided five specific takeaways from the season-opening win, while the Roanoke Times focused on three primary takeaways from Franklin's first game. The dominance of the Virginia Tech side was a central theme across these reports, with the Roanoke Times explicitly stating that Franklin delivered in his debut as the Hokies routed their opponents. Context provided by 247Sports indicates that the game served as a critical recruiting opportunity. Dozens of recruits visited the campus to witness James Franklin's first win. Specifically, the coverage mentions that 2028 defensive lineman Patrick Cheatham Jr. was impressed by the dominant defensive performance displayed during the game.

This suggests that the debut was intended not only as a competitive start to the season but as a statement to prospective athletes. The atmosphere included the traditional 'Enter Sandman' entrance, signaling the start of the Franklin era at the university. Future focus will likely remain on how the team translates this early momentum into the rest of the season. While the win over VMI was historic in its margin, observers will look for continued consistency in the defensive performance that impressed recruits like Cheatham Jr. Additional analysis is expected from Techsideline.com, which published a piece titled 'Embrace The Edge' on Sunday following the game. The primary narrative moving forward will be whether the statement made during this season-opener can be maintained against more challenging competition as the Franklin era progresses.
