## Executive Summary
Nepal has declared a national day of mourning following catastrophic floods and mudslides that have resulted in at least 1,300 fatalities.

## Intelligence Brief
Nepal is observing a national day of mourning following a series of deadly floods and mudslides that have caused widespread devastation. According to reports from NBC News, PBS, and Al Jazeera, the death toll from these natural disasters has reached at least 1,300 people. The scale of the tragedy has prompted a formal period of mourning across the country to honor those lost in the floods. Rescue operations are currently ongoing as teams attempt to locate the missing, although the process is fraught with extreme difficulty due to the environmental conditions left in the wake of the storms. Coverage from Al Jazeera English, as cited by Space Daily, highlights the precarious nature of the current rescue efforts. Rescue crews are actively digging for people who remain missing, but they are facing significant delays.

The ground remains saturated and unstable, which has not only buried victims but is now actively slowing down the crews sent to reach them. News & World Report emphasizes that a critical focus of the rescue mission is currently directed toward workers who are trapped inside three separate tunnels, adding a specific layer of urgency to the technical operations. This crisis has drawn international attention and prompted grassroots responses far beyond the borders of Nepal. For instance, NBC4 WCMH-TV reports that students from Ohio State are taking action to help those affected by the flooding. This indicates that the disaster's impact is being felt globally, leading to mobilization efforts by students in the United States to provide support for the victims and the recovery process. The combination of high casualty counts and the collapse of infrastructure underscores the severity of the event.

Looking forward, the primary focus remains on the search and recovery operations. Recovery teams must continue to navigate the unstable terrain to find the missing, while specialized efforts continue for the workers trapped in the three tunnels. Based on the reports from Reuters and other outlets, the immediate priority for the region is managing the aftermath of the floods and providing aid to the survivors while the national mourning period takes place. Further updates on the casualty count may emerge as more bodies are recovered from the mudslides.
