> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-09-07 12:07 UTC · Category: Technology

## Executive Summary
Reports suggest Sony has greenlit the return of the dormant Killzone first-person shooter franchise, possibly as a remake in early development.

## Intelligence Brief
The coverage indicates that a new project is currently in the very early stages of production. While the exact nature of the project is not officially confirmed, some reports suggest that the effort is likely a remake of existing material rather than an entirely new entry in the series. The news highlights a potential shift in PlayStation's first-party strategy regarding its first-person shooter offerings. Multiple gaming outlets have focused on the dormancy of the franchise and the timing of this development. Wccftech reports that the return of Killzone has been greenlit even ahead of Horizon 3.

Polygon.com and IGN both emphasize that an iconic and long-dormant PlayStation first-person shooter is making a comeback based on new reports. MP1st specifically notes that the production process is in its very early stages, while Push Square characterizes the situation as a rumour, specifically pointing toward the likelihood of a remake being the core objective of the project. To understand the significance of these reports, it is necessary to note that the Killzone franchise has been described as being in the grave for more than ten years. As a staple of the PlayStation ecosystem, the franchise's long absence has made its reported revival a point of interest for industry analysts and fans. The mention of the project's priority relative to other major titles like Horizon 3 suggests a specific internal ranking of development priorities at Sony, though official confirmation of this hierarchy has not been provided by the company.

Future developments will likely center on whether Sony confirms the existence of the project or provides details on the specific game being remade. Since the reports state the project is in very early stages, immediate gameplay details or release dates are not available in the current coverage. Observers are waiting to see if the project is indeed a remake or a new installment, and how its development timeline will align with other upcoming PlayStation first-party releases mentioned in the reports.
